It’s not always easy being me. Hey, don’t laugh, I speaketh the truth daaaahlings. Seriously, sometimes Moi just does not have the energy inside my gorgeous body to get everything done. This is why I harbour an evil, ugly secret: I have, on several occasions, passed store bought, restaurant bought, and mixes off as my own creations. I have bought curries from a restaurant and served them to guests. I just sprinkle a bit of coriander/cilantro over the top to give it that “home-made” look. I’ve decanted food from the supermarkets into my own plates and made it look as if I slaved over them myself. The same can be said with cake, cookie, and brownie mixes. The only problem arises when people really like your “special secret recipe” or when someone makes a request, and the supermarket no longer makes that product anymore… that sucks, I hate it when that happens.
The secret to passing someone else’s creations off as your own is to pimp them up in some way or form. Hence, I present to you very special recipe for Evil Brownies. In case you haven’t realised, the “evil” ingredient is the naughty glint in my eyes as I sprinkle a bit of flour onto my Dior couture house frock, and release a lock of hair from my well coiffured hair. You gotta look the part. People love to think you’ve been slaving away for their benefit (*ahem: Mr P, I’m not talking about anything I’d ever serve you, darlingkins).
Now I know, some of you are thinking, “Hey, I would know it if someone tried to pass off a mix as their own, I can tell.” Yeah… right, keep telling yourself that. Try my tricks when you’re stuck for time or feeling a bit harassed. You’ll thank me.
If you tell anyone my secret, I may have to kill you.
Evil Brownies
Ingredients:
- brownie mix (the best you can buy, you don’t want to pass off cheap crap as your own!)
- any ingredients required to make the mix
- the zest of two oranges
- a few drops of orange colouring
- 5 ounces of full fat cream cheese
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
Mix together any ingredients necessary to make up your brownie mix.
In a separate bowl, mix together room temperature cream cheese, sugar, orange zest and food colouring.
Pour 3/4 of the brownie mixture into a buttered 9×9 pan. Now, take spoonfuls of the cream cheese mixture and blob it on to the top in a haphazard manner. Do the same with the remaining brownie mix. Now, use something like a knife, or a toothpick to swirl the colours into each other, creating a marbling effect.
Bake on 350 for 40-45 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in brownie 1 inch from side of pan comes out almost clean. Cool completely before cutting into individual servings.

THANK YOU! I am so trying this out! The mixes usually taste off for me.
I hope you have a happy Halloween!
Oh, HH…how dare you tease me with these brownies!!! Don’t worry your secret is safe with me. I tend to so the same myself sometimes. lol.
Have I told you how much I love reading your post? Love your outlook on everything and the tone of your writing.
I can’t say I’ve tried to pass off box stuff as my own, but that’s only because I haven’t tried doctoring it up as you have here-when I do, I’ll be using this recipe of yours, of which you might or might not get credit.
I haven’t made any of the boxed stuff since…………..well I really can’t remember. Mostly, because I can’t decipher the list of ingredients. Maybe things have changed, I will now have a look see, next time I am in the supermarket. Great way to recreate brownies as your own.
You are awesome! Share your secrets with me any day. These brownies do sound amazing & I don’t care at all they there is some box mix in there. The addition of orange & cream cheese makes them all your own! xo
You finally decided to post a photo of yourself? You are gorgeous!!!
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’re hilarious! These are the perfect shades of brown and orange for the fall season and for Halloween, and a great idea for those last minute binds.
Ooooh, I am loving that evil orange cheesecake swirl. Scrumptious!
What can I say? Cream cheese makes anything better, least of all brownie mix! And that first pic cracked me up! >__<

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I adore cream cheese with brownie! You look fabulous…love the hot pants
Nothing wrong with doctoring up a box mix! This is the best way – with a little bit of cream cheese! Have you heard of the cake mix doctor – she uses box cakes to make all kinds of fancy cakes. Some of them are pretty good. Happy Halloween! xoxo
Great idea! Happy Halloween!
I love you – lol! This was my favorite post of the day! I’ll have to remember to get the best I can buy, I don’t want to pass off cheap crap as my own!
These brownies do look truly amazing too, you know, darling!
I think that I would add a big splash of Cointreau or grand Marnier to themix for even a more orange like flavour!
We won’t tell your secret,…never!
HAHAHA it’s okay, I’m pretty sure you’re not the only one around
and if you didn’t tell me, i’d thought those brownies were homemade! so, great job! (:
Yum these look great. I had a box of Dr Oetker blondie mix recently and it wasn’t that bad, it was better than some of the rubbish brownies I have had in cafes. Adding your own bits and pies to make things more exciting isn’t evil at all!
evil genius, i would say!!!
Oh silly, evil you! (that photo is marvelous!)
Giada does this all the time! We all do. But your secret is safe with me.
My father used to love cheese souffle and sometimes I just didn’t have time….Stouffers made a good one so I often dumped two of them in a casserole and stuck it in the oven. He never knew the difference.
HH,
Your photo is fantastic, I love it. The brownie recipe sounds great and I will give it a try. Sometimes doctoring up a box mix is all I have time for and it always turns out delish…yours looks fantastic.
xx

What a fabulous idea, but please…. anything that looks that yummy can’t be evil and neither can anyone who shares such helpful hints.
I;m always up for some ‘Evil Brownies’
“You are naughty but I like you!”
Haha, this post made me laugh. I admit it – I’ve been guilty of using store bought mixes a time or two as homemade stand-ins. Sometimes, a gal’s just gotta use a mix.
