I have a couple of beautiful apple trees in my back yard. They were a key factor in buying the house I now live in. They bring me so much happiness. I love to see the little flowers blooming on them in the spring, and I love it even more when the little apples start growing in. Best of all is when I get to pick the apples though. My apple trees are one of my life’s simple pleasures. Just knowing that they are outside in my garden makes me happy. The apples that grow on the trees, however, are not the most beautiful apples in the world. I don’t think any supermarket would have them. Most of them have little blemishes on them, and not all of them come in the “perfect” apple shape, but that’s what real organic food looks like I guess. The biggest and best of my trees produces cooking apples. It is quite mature and gives a lot of fruit… much more than I would ever know what to do with, that’s for sure– please email me any suggestions or recipes. Mr P doesn’t eat apples (unless they are in a pie), and a girl can only eat so much fruit. Applesauce, however, seems to be the recipe that uses the most apples, so that’s what I’ve decided to make. I’ve tried to be a bit creative in my choice of flavour by using spices that I associated with one of my favorite drinks: Indain chai. It came out pretty awesome if I do say so myself
.
Heavenly Housewife’s Chai Spiced Apple Sauce
Ingredients:
- 4 pounds of apples that have been peeled, cored and diced
- juice of one lemon
- 1/4 cup dark brown sugar (packed)
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1 1/4 cup of hot strongly brewed tea
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1 teaspoon of cardamom
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground clove
Put all the ingredients into a large pot and bring to a boil. Once boiling, bring to a simmer and cook until all the apple pieces are broken down. Once it is mostly cooked, you can use a potato masher to speed the process up a bit. Or, if you like it a little chunky, that’s fine too.
Apple sauce will last up to a year if packed in the freezer.

I used to climb my grandparents’ apple tree. I wish I had one! It must be fun to think of different ways to use all those apples. Your applesauce sounds fantastic with tea and spices.
We now have an apple tree. But it’s small and this year, a few months after we planted it, we harvested a total of two somewhat worm-infested apples.
I wish we had big, mature apple tree. Or even SPACE for such!
I love chai spice and this recipe sounds great, I never thought to use it in applesauce. I miss the good apples we used to get growing up in Michigan. My mom would get them by the bushel out on at the local orchard. Ahh…memories!
How satisfying it must be to make something so delicious from fruit grown in your backyard. And what an original idea incorporating the flavors of chai tea into applesauce. I can’t wait to try it
What a fantastic idea! I like applesauce but feel it is often a bit dull. This is much more exciting. YOu should use it to make applesauce cake.
I love applesauce! I haven’t had any in about forever though. Maya hates it, but loves apples – go figure! I bet my desi in-laws would love the infusion of chai.
How I wish I had apple trees in my backyard. All I have is traffic. And lots of it.
Ooo! This looks very god and my mom loves chai. I am sharing this with her right now.
A part of me should baulk against the *shudder* healthy aspect to this, but I can’t resist a gorgeous blend of fragrant spices.
It would be so delightful to have an apple tree. Wandering through my cousin’s apple orchard in spring as the sun hits and warms the fruit is such a magic scent. Lucky you
Chai spiced applesauce with apples from your own tree! Wow! Amazing!
I make chai applesauce all the time, one of my absolute favorite sweet treats. Yours sounds wonderful! xo
This applesauce looks fabulous – and all the better for being chai-spiced.
Applesauce sounds as wonderful and yours look great! I probably will be making my own applesauce soon too. Thank you and hope you’re enjoying your weekend.

HH, this looks so good. How delicious to have all those spices with the apples. Sounds great. Please pop some over to me….
I’m so jealous of your apple trees, daaahling! They’re one of my favorite fruits and I would love to have 2 trees of apples at my beck and call.
Wonderful spices you used in the applesauce!
A very unique apple sauce, sounds so good with chai!
I know exactly what you’re talking about, there is one small apple tree growing in my backyard and we love it so much…always excited about eating apples from it and baking galettes.
Maybe this year I’ll try your recipe for this lovely apple sauce
I love the idea of chai mixed with apples! I wish I had a tree in my backyard. This morning Mr.NN and I went and picked a bunch off apples at an orchard. I’m planning on making, apple dumplings, apple butter and apple sauce…yum!
What a fantastic idea! I love applesauce – especially this time of year. And the idea of all of those lovely, warming spices just sounds perfect!
Thank you lovely HH for this applesauce recipe. I LOVE chi and drink a iced chi every morning. I know that I will love this. Just seems so fall’ish too.
Hope you had a good week? Wishing you two a lovely Sunday xo xo
oh wow, i would love to have an apple tree in my backyard! (i’d love to have a backyard.) the closest i’ve come is parsley on my balcony and that didn’t last too long :p hope you’re having a great weekend!
I had an ancient apple tree for many years. The apples were a mess but tasted great…. I probably loved them more because of it…little orphan apples. Love the chai spices in the sauce… great idea that would be warm and fragrant on a cool fall day!
What a delicious way to welcome autumn. Love all those warming, fragrant spices.
I have never had Chai Spiced Apple Sauce but I would love to! Sounds incredible. I love your photo, very gorgeous indeed. I am moved by how much happiness your Apple Trees bring you, I am an avid gardener and just love it when I hear others enthusiasm and appreciation of the truly beautiful things in life. My husband and I purchased our home 17 years ago and I really do believe it was because the little petite orchard in the backyard was in full bloom with fragrant apple and fruit blossoms.(at the time I wasn’t such a good gardner I have learned over the years) I bake from the fruit trees as often as possible and I too enjoy their beautiful blemishes and imperfections.
Hoping your weekend was divine
xoxo

Your applesauce sounds delicious
This year I picked the apples from our backyard tree a tad early (guess I was a little overzealous in trying to keep the pesky blue jays from eating them) so they were a bit sour. I sliced most of them into 1/4-inch slices and dried them in the food dehydrator we bought this year (used, on Craig’s List). They make a delicious snack. Still hoping to make some apple jam with the apples that are left . . .
How fabulous to have an apple tree and the chai flavouring sounds divine!
I grew up with appletrees in our yard, it was heaven! Don’t care for Chai spices in my tea…but the idea of them in applesauce sounds amazing!
We used to have a yard of apple trees, too. And my, they were ugly! But they sure did make super applesauce.
Love the spices in your recipe; I’m going to add them to my next batch. I may live in Florida, but I still make applesauce every fall. It freezes so well too!
How wonderful to have apple trees in your backyard! I would love to look out and see those blossoms. I think you had a great idea to make chai spiced applesauce. Homemade applesauce is infinitely better than anything from the store and this one looks addictive with all those tasty spices.
I’m a big fan of apple cake, especially when it is doused with caramel sauce. I wonder if Mr P would like that? I also wonder if you could slice them and bake them in at low heat to make apple chips? They might be good on their own or with a dip.
lovely addition of tea this looks delicious
Dear HH,
I am so slow in responding to your applesauce question. I have put up 1000’s of bottles of applesauce over the years, but to be honest I hate doing it so I stopped about 10 years ago. For some strange reason it turned my fingernails black. Yes, it’s true. Whenever I put up applesauce something chemically would happen and cause my nails to go black around the edges. Crazy! I never honed a great recipe, just used quality apples, cooked them and ran them through my machine and bottled them. I’ll keep my eyes open for a WONDERFUL recipe and send it to you. I do have two friends who I would trust and get back to you. Promise.

That’s such a cool twist for fall!
Mmmmm…applesauce. I’ve never had them in any other flavor before, just the good ol’ fashioned kind. This one looks like one I should try. Plus I love chai.
this recipes sounds really good. im gonna give this a shot:)
That applesauce’s aroma must be sold in a candle…the senses will be spoiled with your recipe.
I’ve made many sauces…however, never quite with this mix.
Just lovely. Thank you.
Flavourful wishes,
Claudia
Oh how lovely to have apple trees…your little gems look perfect to me. Love this recipe too
I love applesauce, especially homemade. We go apple picking every year and I make applesauce by the batch loads for days afterwards!
YUM!!! Amazing. I cant wait to make this. I used to make applesauce with my Grandma Millie. Sweet memories….I love this chai twist!
Mmmm… I’m drooling……. I could use some of these. Hahaha!
Wow – that applesauce really sounds delicious and I love your description of your apple trees! How fabulous to have them in your yard and what a wonderful recipe for them to fulfill their apple destiny in. Thanks so much for sharing!
HH, this applesauce recipe is a keeper! My husband loves his spaghetti Bolognaise with some applesauce….(a weird dining habit, as I always said) so I think I shall try the recipe instead buying them from the stores.
Angie
Wonderful apple sauce recipe, darliiink HH! Mr Lola is going to enjoy that this weekend with roast pork!
Must rush now – am so super busy!! (Difficult even to keep up with myself these days!)
In haste & many *kisses*
XOXO LOLA:)
What a lovely & amazing tasty looking apple sauce!!
Lovely creation!
Autumn already?! Time flies! This sounds amazing, I can smell it from here!
I’m with you on the delights of little apple trees, we are having a little orchard at our new home…cannot wait to enjoy it. The apple sauce sounds amazing.
hugs DJ
I can eat a lot of fruits but I can only eat so much apples! And I like that you “spiced” the sauce…
What a brilliant idea! I have the same “problem” here, we have way too many apples from our mountain orchard and I frankly sometimes just don’t know what to do, besides eating 3 a day! Love the thought of a spiced applesauce, since regular applesauce tastes rather bland and , well, a bit dull~
I really love this spice mix and I can imagine how delicious it would be with apple! Yum!
Sounds awesome. Spiced apple sauce would be heavenly.
We have an apple tree in our car park which we make apple sauce from, may try adding the spice sounds wonderful! X
I love chai tea! All of those spices make me feel all warm inside. What a unique and delicious apple sauce! Lucky you for having those apple trees! xoxo
