Ottolenghi White Chocolate Blueberry Cookies

Ottolenghi cookies with white chocolate and dried blueberriesI felt a little bad that even though the Ottolenghi cook books is one of my favourites, I’ve only made one recipe from it. I just tend to open it and drool at the pictures and fantasise that I am at Ottolenghi. Yes daaaaaaahlings,I am always fantasising about food and what I want to eat. Sad, isn’t it? Some women fantasise over Johnny Depp or George Clooney, and I fantasise about cake. Well, today I thought I’d try out these cookies. In the book they are made with cranberries rather than blueberries, but the author does suggest using dried blueberries as a substitution for a more “grown up” taste. Well, I don’t know if I consider myself grown up, but I am not a fan of cranberries. They make my mouth feel dry :P *yech*–not nice. You know daaahlings, blueberries are a fabulous super fruit. They are just loaded with anti-oxidants. Well, at least that’s what you can tell yourself as you gobble these up.

By the way, check back because I am going to make the apple cake too. You know, the same one that Mr P ate when we ate at the restaurant. As I said, I fantasise about cakes, and that one is just haunting me. Yeah, there goes all my hard work at the gym…

Ottolenghi white chocolate blueberry cookies

White Chocolate Blueberry Cookies

Makes 25-30 cookies

Ingredients

  • 90g plain flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 100g unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 110g soft brown sugar
  • 25g caster sugar
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 80g whole rolled oats
  • 60g white chocolate, chopped into chocolate chip sized pieces
  • 75g dried blueberries

Preheat the oven to 170C, Gas Mark 3. Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda and set aside.

Put the butter, vanilla and sugars in a large mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture is lighter in colour and texture. Gradually add the egg, making sure each addition is fully incorporated before adding more. Add the flour mixture and the oats, then the chocolate and the cranberries. Do not continue mixing once dry ingredients are blended in.

Chill the mixture slightly to help you shape the biscuits. Scoop out a bit of the mix with a spoon and use your hands to roll it into a ball somewhere between the size of an olive and a walnut. Press the balls lightly on to baking trays lined with baking parchment. Make sure you space them a good 6-7cm apart (they will spread more than you expect!). Place in the oven and bake for about 10 minutes untiil they yare a good brown colour. Remove from oven and allow to cool on trays before serving.

The Heavenly Verdict: In all honesty, I just wasn’t feeling these cookies. Neither was Mr P. I was kind of surprised. I really thought I was going to love these. Don’t get me wrong, the cookies were not actually yucky or anything, they just were not to my taste. Grand Master P (my father-in-law LOL) loved them, however. He pretty much gobbled them all up. That made me happy. But would I make these cookies again? No, not unless I was specifically asked to make some more.

Found your lovely cookies (blueberries are my husband’s favorite!) tonight as I worked on my blog. And I gave you a mention – even though I opted to enjoy the firelight and (unusual) quiet and leave the baking for another day. :-)

I cannot wait to give these a try, though!
