Cream Tea on the Cheap

Some people who read my blog are under the impression that I live in London. Au contraire my dears. Moi, in fact, lives in the boonies. Dining choices in my fair town, are kind of limited. There are no afternoon teas to be had... even if you are a housewife of distinction. Sad, no? Well, you can actually get cream tea. Cream tea is just the scones, clotted cream and jam with tea. Unlike a proper afternoon tea, it does not include the lovely finger sandwiches or mini deserts. Still, the cream tea part is usually my favourite part of the afternoon tea, if truth be told. So, I wondered... how does cream tea at my local shopping centre compare with those in London. In other words, how do the other half (the plebs) live? Moi is about to find out...

Druckers is a chain of patisseries in the UK. They serve slices of cakes, sandwiches and the like. It's a pleasant place to stop for a snack or a light lunch, but it is a far cry from the uber fab places I get to eat at when I'm in London. Here though, it's quite a popular place to eat. You walk up to the counter, make your order, and by the time you get to the cash register, you have your tray of goodies. Self-service daaaaahlings. Aaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! What is that about?

For £3.40 I got to choose between plain or fruited scones (I chose plain, the fruited ones weren't looking too good). I got my favorite clotted cream: Rodda's, a little pat of butter (which I didn't use-you never get butter as part of proper cream tea), and a teeny Tiptree jam. Could you believe it, they didn't have strawberry???? They only had black currant :(. I was unamused. You would never get black currant in London daaaaahlings. This is served with a tiny pot of tea and some milk.

It ain't the Ritz, that's for sure:

Sitting under the lurid lights, I assembled my scone.

And you know what? In all honesty it was really tasty. I mean, I love Rodda's clotted cream, and the jam was really good too, despite it being black currant. It wasn't as good as strawberry, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment.

It did have the fatty goodness factor. I could even feel my bum expanding as I ate that little tub of clotted cream. BUT ... and this is a big but (pun intended--LOL I kill me)... I would not have cream tea here again. Why? Cream tea is supposed to be a real treat. It just doen't feel like something special in this kind of environment. Now, more than ever, I am aware that cream tea and afternoon tea are just as much about ceremony, service and elegance as they are about the food. For this reason, I could never recommend cream tea on the cheap. It ruins the expereince, and quite frankly, a good tea is a total experience. This was just nice food in a dreary setting. If you are going out for a treat, then treat yourself properly. Stay away from the cheap stuff, life is short, and you deserve better!

OH love the first pic, I really want to eat it.

I agree, it's about the rest of what goes with the treat. I really enjoyed you previewing it though.

I've never had clotted cream before but your assembled scone looks delicious! I love the ceremony of things like this so I would probably agree with you on the keeping the specialness within those indulgent times!

Oh you kill me too HH! So agree about ceremony etc, some of the best meals I've had were as much about the sense of place, the service and the food. So glad you did do this review though, throroughly enjoyed it :)

I so wish that I could find that cream here. I'm going to be on the lookout for it! The scone looks delicious to me. So fluffy and light. I know how you feel about being out in the boonies. I'm out in the country here in KY, but if I drive a half hour I can be in the city. Sometimes I wonder why we moved out here, but the schools are better and it's quiet and the city isn't too far away.

The boonies eh? I would have never guessed! I'm sure it's the fabulous part of the boonies though!

Sadly I've never had cream tea or a proper afternoon tea before, Lipton is the only tea I've ever had, which I can only picture you gagging at this point...sigh!

One day, I'll make to London and hopefully you could show me the ropes.

Hugs,
Karyn

Your scone looked really good

Never heard that expression "boonies" before so I looked it up, I think we would say the "sticks"! Was your Druckers in Brum? Love your Blog!!!

Great post apart from one thing - clearly blackcurrant jam is MUCH nicer than strawberry. Although I guess that the little seeds that get in your teeth aren't ideal for the glamorous housewife!
I had to look up boonies too, so I feel I've learnt something new today. :D

From one boonie-bound housewife to another, I completely agree - stay away from the cheap stuff! Cream tea is meant to be enjoyed in luxury :)
ps. strawberry is my favorite flavor of jam but I don't mind blackcurrant because it reminds me of my childhood - ribena and black currant pastilles

I'd love to experience a good afternoon tea one day. There's a tea shop here in LA that does that sort of thing, but it isn't the same.

Although I've never been to England and had proper tea there, I've had teas here that I loved because of the fact that they seemed special and fancy. So, I totally agree with your post. Some things it's ok to get on the cheap; others not.

I could go for a scone and some clotted cream right now though.

Cream Tea, along with most things, hasn't travelled north yet!!!
I find Drucker's cakes quite synthetic, which is unfortunate.
The scone looks tempting though.........

It does sound like more of a snack than a proper cream tea ... although a tasty looking snack at that! Will you smack with a wet noodle if I say I'd rather the blackberry than the strawberry jam?! LOL ;)

Nice to see you slumming it like the rest of us! But please don't do it again as I live my fancy tea and cake fantasies through you and your blog, and I just dont want to know that you might spend as little as £3.40 on a treat!

All I can say is that I'm relieve you put the cream & jam on in the right order. I wouldn't countenance contact any longer if you'd got it wrong.

How I'd love to get you to my certain spa town, for a high tea. It's rather out-in-the-sticks & certainly nowhere near town. I think it'd be SPLENDIFOROUS daaaahling.

I still love that you take us with you weather it is London or not! I hate to admit it, but I love black currant rather than strawberry jam. (shhh don't tell anyone...I live so close to Plant City where they have the Strawberry Festival)

Isn't that what tea is all about though the whole experience? Thanks!

What a lovely post!!!! You are absolutley right...I remember many years ago, having tea at Fortnum and Mason's, with champagne and finger sandwiches, and elderly ladies queuing up that seemed loke the replica of Queen E II; if you come to Paris, go to Mariage frères
Thanks for everything!

Absolutely strawberry jam is the go for me too! Yes too true, afternoon tea is best enjoyed in moderation and should be indulgent with realy clotted cream (darling you wouldn't believe how many places used whipped cream here!).

Such great..great advice HH. Why ruin a great, special experience by cheapening it at a substandard venue. Sort of like sex in a flea bag hotel, right?

I am one of those reader that thought you lived in or very near London. Loved reading about tea in the outskirts. Clotted cream is clotted cream . . . I live in the western US! So glad I can host my own teas.

My mother used to call things like your cream tea FODDER. In other words, just something to fill you up.
Because we don't have tea served anyplace in my little town, I guess I would pass on second choices too. There are places within and hour I could go if I wanted a decent tea.
And, my dear, I suppose I could traipse on over to London again if I got truly desperate!
