Gift Ideas for People You Don't Like
I went to London last Saturday and towards the afternoon I stopped in Selfridges. It was totally not fun. It is that time of year again when London is jam packed full of holiday shoppers. You can't really move without budging into someone. It is absolutley uncomfortable and kind of frustrating. How people are supposed to pick out presents in that kind of environment, I am not sure. I adore shopping, but not like this.
Why is it that certain holidays are just only about gift giving? Yes, they may have some wonderful meanings and purposes, but in the end, it really is all about the goodies if we are honest. What I really hate is when there are people that we feel we must give something to, even if we don't actually like them. Don't pretend you don't have any of these daaaaaaaaahlings. I know you do. I have a couple of them myself. They are people (sometimes work mates, "friends", and sometimes family) that we loathe to spend our money on. Especially when there are so many fabulous goodies out there that we would like to buy for ourselves. For you, my dears, I've come up with some special ideas :D.
The following is something I found on Serious Eats, which actually was the inspiration for this blog post.

Actually, I thought this was really cute. Put some Cheerios in a plastic bag and pass them off as donut seeds! Ah, if only one really could grow a donut tree. Mine would surely grow Krispy Kremes and there would be special "hot light" to let you know when the fresh donuts have grown in :D. One can dream I guess. But think of the possibilities! How many of these little "gifts" can you make for $1? Perhaps this would make a cool gift for someone's snotty little kid? I bet you have something better to buy with your hard earned money than some stupid GI Joe or Barbie toy for some little brat!
Or how about you buy them a book with a "secret" message, something that is sure to insult. Here are a couple of examples:

Tell someone they have no manners, AND they are dumb!

Something for a multi-faceted looser

Something for the office slut
For my next idea, I was thinking you can do something that makes YOU feel good about yourself while not actually "giving" the recipient anything. You can buy someone a charitable gift. You can help a child, contribute towards a medical charity, or adopt a pet/animal in your friend's name for a year. Here is a website with a great list of these kind of gifts. An added bonus here is that with this gift, it is incredibly politically incorrect for the recipient to act anything other than pleased. Sneaky!
How about buying your not so favorite person a little pet for their child? Woo hoo! That would open up a freakin' can of worms (excuse the pun)! Little Snot Nose can be the recipient of a charming hamster which mom or dad will now have to feed and clean. Now that's cool, right? Just imagine all the joy you will get knowing someone you don't really like is cleaning up hamster poo, and it's all your fault?!? Oh, the absolute JOY!!!
Of course there's always the concept of re-gifting. Just give someone a junky present that someone gave you. Did someone buy you some cheap piece of tat last year? Pass it onto someone who really deserves it! Make sure to wrap it up nice though :D.
Rubber chicken handbag anyone?
Believe it or not, this bag was actually sold out!!! Who the heck would buy this??? Someone is walking around looking like a major freaky-doo. I bet it was Britney.
Last but not least, there's always some crap you can buy at the dollar/pound store. You never know what you can find at a dollar store... but surely you have "friends" that deserve on of those gems, no? Please, people do this! I see loads of people heading into the dollar stores around this time of year. Yeah, that's probably where your last dumb gift came from. Return the favour daaaaaahling, and treat YOURSELF to a goodie, something that you actually DO want.
Now that I've saved you oodles of money, perhaps you'd like to buy something for your favorite housewife, no? Have you ever given someone a present that you knew kinda sucked? Do tell the class my dear, we want to know!

Oh I loved this post HH. I really enjoyed it .. laughing like we are naughty schoolgirls or something. The chicken bag sold out are you Kidding!!!
The donut seeds are hilarious and so is the pet. HH your inner mischief maker is coming out.
Great weekend to you darling,
xxx
Fabulous gift ideas... I love those books and that donut seed is hilarious. Hmmmmm... you gave me some good ideas here. Brilliant post!
Hahaha...donut seeds. I think mine would grow krispy kreme, too. I hate holiday shopping. That's why my new tradition that I started in recent years is giving them a little box of homemade baked goods made by yours truly. Saves on having to god out and spending a whole but of cash I don't really have.
Re-gifting always seems a good idea to me in January but come December I've forgotten who gave me what tat and dare not risk giving something back to the same side of the family!
Love the donut seeds - though they're actually more useful than those seed kits that get given as serious presents. At least you can eat them. How many people turn their printed cardboard box of dirt into the thing on the outside?
"multi-faceted loser" Best line you ever wrote! LOLOLOLOL
Love those doughnut seeds!
Love the donut seeds, they are actualy cute! The rubber chicken purse sold out - crazy!! I probably wouldn't even buy it for a joke. I agree about the holidays. Gift giving should be about thoughtful gifts. Anymore it's all about just buying something for someone, then it's about whether you bought enough. What is enough? I don't know if I've ever bought a gift for someone I didn't like though. Usually they know I don't like them and wouldn't expect anything.
Thank you I needed a good laugh! I laughed the whole way through. Hey was that my rubber chicken purse you regifted? :P Do they really have a Pound Store over there? These are great ideas, It's nice to know someone else feels the same way I do!
You are brilliant! It's all fabulous but I love the donut seeds!
We draw names for a gift exchange at our office and I had the unfortunate luck to draw the "Office Bitch". You just have me the solution to my delimina.
The Ettiquette book would be good, I wonder if there's a "Bitch No More" book? I must run to my book store and have a look!
Perhaps a lovely pair of panites with itching powder placed in a strategic place? Oh, HH...you're bringing the evil out in me!
Have a fabulous weekend sweet friend!
Great post! Laughed myself silly. You are a naughty, naughty girl. But I love ya.
My daugher got a gift a few years ago- one of those God-awful caramel apples all wrapped up and decorated. A gift from my very cheap brother. Inside the box was a gift card- made out to him. So he just passed along the caramel apple. Talk about spending no money.
GREAT post, one of your best yet, absolutely killed me!
:)
"Something for a multi-faceted looser" - hahahaha! That's a good one : D
What a funny posdt! hahahahaha,...Donut seeds,....
"Fat Broke and Lonely No More"
Bwa ha ha ha ha ha!!!
Can you IMAGINE getting that as a gift???
Good Lord, you don't know how much I'd love to give it!!!!!
The cheerios are funny~
sandy toe
You have the solutions to all my Christmas dilemmas! This post is a gem. The donut seeds are kind of cute and the book ideas are so funny! Hope your having a lovely weekend!
hahah!!! Oh this post was excellent. The office slut and chicken bag were the best.
though, I love the donut seeds... I'll have to do that one for realz
LOL at those donut seeds! :D Is there something wrong with me in that I love that chicken bag? Have you seen that skincare range by Anatomicals? They've got all sorts of clever names :P
LOL that chicken bag is too much! And I wonder who I can give that "Dont Give It Away" book to this year - too good to pass that one up, maybe I'll start up the gift exchange again :D A few years ago I gave this to Grisselda (who had a lot of pent-up rage):

Hahaha rubber chicken handbag. I used to avoid Selfridges at all costs. Not only at Christmas. I always got lost and grumpy.
hahahahaha ! Rubber chicken bag he hehe!
Excellent post and great tips.
Good friends are always great help.
Thanks for sharing.
LOL!
Hahaha great post! I love these gift idea. Instead of giving away my limoncello perhaps I should just give everyone donut seeds...:)
Nice post and fun too :D
oh, I absolutely love this post. These ideas are so hilarious. :) I love the one for the donuts. I am so with you on having the hot light for KK donuts. I love that place probably more than I should. :) Hope you have a great week, doll.
This is a very funny post, it's true we all have someone that we have to give a gift to that we don't like, like my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law. I've never had the courage to give a bad gift because of all the awful chatter that would ensue. I just give them a neutral thoughtless gift, not enough to complain about but nothing special.
I've got it. You plant a donut tree, I'll plant a meatball tree, we'll add some pasta and crossant bushes, and we'll both be pleasantly plump and sated.
Gosh... you're so hilarious! I think re-gifting is what most people did and that's the fact. Well, that's not a bad idea since you don't need those then just give it away, better than you keep them in the store room.
I'm so dreading shopping for Christmas this year! I usually do it ahead of time but these past few months have been so busy. Looks like I'll be lining up with everyone else.
Or buying donut seeds lol
The rubber chicken handbag is hilarious! I love the gifts with a message too. But, I usually give a gift that supports a cause when I 'have' to give a gift I'd rather not give.
I loved this post. It put a big smile on my face. I hope your week has started off well. Take care. Cheers!
That looks like a cool take on Xmas gifts :) Actually, I wouldn't mind getting that silly rubber chicken handbag :) And those donut seeds - fabulous!!!
Superb blog post! Thanks.
I love the donut seeds, they're so cute! As far as giving bad gifts goes, I've been guilty a few times...I sometimes regift (aaahhh! horrifying, I know! ;) ), but I only do it to people who give me shoddy gifts to begin with (and I'm careful to never regift to the giver, lol!).
I can think of some peeps that could benefit from etiquette for dummies for sure!
Fab post;) great ideas. Every single gift is hilarious
This post was hysterically funny. Maybe, because I do have a couple of people on my holiday list that I am obligated to purchase a gift for and I dread it each year. The Donut Seeds are too damn funny....I think the charitable contribution is a win-win sitiuation and like that idea too. Nah, forget it, I think the chicken bag is the best!
Haha!!! Too funny. I know a few people who could use that etiquitte book. :)
You are so funny I can't stand it! The donut seeds are too much--- where did you come from?
omg that chicken bag is cracking me up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Puerto Rico is great! 2 days till Thanksgiving, and then back to real life on Saturday!
Really funny post. I love the donut seeds. hilarious. I must admit I have the chicken purse and I lurves it! Every time I carry it around I feel like I am making fun of people who pay $8,000 for a designer bag. Plus it's a great conversation piece.
I LOVE the donut seeds idea. If only they worked...I would insist we plant a whole orchard on the allotment! K x
Love this post!! I just might have to hand out some 'donut seeds' for the holiday!!
