The Goodie Trove that is the Laduree Front Room

Remember when how I told you that Laduree has a front room where you can buy goodies for takeaway? Well, here it is:

Mr P and I took the liberty of sampling a few of their delectables for your blog reading pleasure. No, this had nothing to do with us and our greedy bellies, do not offend me *wink*. Hubby selected some financiers. These were something that neither of us have ever tried before. They didn’t look too special to me, and I wasn’t expecting much when I bit into one, but… OH. MY. GOD! These were without a doubt my best food discovery in Paris. These simple little cakes were just amazing, and they had an unexpected sugary crunch to the exterior. I absolutely can not wait for the next time I can go back for more. I know I will positively gorge on these!

Financiers: unassuming, but absolutely amazing!

For those of you who are new to this treat, like me, here’s a bit of info on these lovelies. Financiers (also sometimes called friands) are typically made of almond flour– though I’ve seen them in Paris in other flavours like pistachio and rasberry. According to Wikipedia, the name financier “is said to derive from the traditional rectangular mold, which resembles a bar of gold. Another theory says that the cake became popular in the financial district of Paris surrounding La Bourse du commerce (the former name of the Paris stock exchange).”

I chose the tarte tatin, which is a real favorite of mine. It looked so plump and inviting. Well, I think it looked better than it tasted. It was certainly juicy, but it just didn’t wow me. Moi needs to be wowed.

And I also chose the butter croissant, because it looked so shiny and pretty. In fact, I would say that I have never seen a more beautiful croissant. It seemed to glow under the warm light of the chandeliers above. “Don’t worry, darling croissant,” I said, “I’ll save you” … ;) . Unfortunately for the croissant, I lied. Hubby and I tore into this like a couple of vultures. Mmmmm… the best croissant in the whole world…. EVAAAAAA!!! Please check back for an upcoming post in which I come to this conclusion in the “Battle of the Croissants.” (Yes, you are excited aren’t you???)
