Pomelo, the Sweet Sister to the Grapefruit

And now, my dears, it is time for a little intermission. Consider this post a little palate cleanser of my Parisian adventures in the form of an exotic citrus, the pomelo. Yes my little lovelies, Donuts to Delirium is nothing if not high brow!

Some people, like my Mr P, don’t like grapefruits because of their bitterness. That being said, it is a known fact that Hubby Dearest is not really a fan of fruit unless its cooked and placed inside some kind of pastry.

I saw some pomelos last week as I was walking though my local Tesco supermarket. There is always something weird and wonderful to be found at Tesco (sometimes you might even find a very obscure and exotic housewife wearing Dior couture, ya know?). In the past I wouldn’t have bothered with the pomelo. Though I would have found it interesting, I would have thought to myself, “I don’t even know how to eat this.” But the pomelo is not a scary fruit daaaaahlings. It’s a sweet and friendly citrus fruit :) .

I looked up the pomelo in Wikipedia and apparently pink is a rather rare colour for the pulp. Usually the insides are yellow or greenish. Typically, one would peel it like an orange, and eat the segments — you will have to score it though, as the pith is quite thick. I also noticed that if you don’t peel the pith absolutely clean off, the fruit can be pretty bitter, so try to remove as much as you can.

Yes, Wikipedia says to peel, but rebel that I am, I cut mine in half. Check it out:

Isn’t it pretty?

Another note on the pomelo, I thought I’d be able to spoon out the segments like the way you do a grapefruit, but this did not work. The pulp is not as delicate as a grapefruit, and it is quite difficult to get the edible portion to come out. A messy and ever so slightly frustrating job of eating the pomelo then ensued. Maybe one day I will learn to follow directions. But seriously, I kinda doubt that. So, that being said, do segment the pomelo.

So, what about the taste, you ask? I thought it was nice, but in all honesty, I like grapefruit better. The pomelo lacks the tangy freshness of a grapefruit, nor does it have the sweet vibrancy of an orange. Well, those are my thoughts, but to each their own. If you see it in the shops, I recommend you try it though. It’s definitely not unpleasant, and I also think it’s so fun trying new foods, don’t you?

Are you wondering what Mr P thought of the whole pomelo thing? Well, on offering him some, and explaining how it was a sweet version of a grapefruit, he turned up his nose and made a little face of “yuck.” No, he was definitely not interested. Oh Mr Persnickety, what am I going to do with you? Maybe if I baked it in a pie…

In my next post, we shall return to the subject of all things fabulous and Parisian. Stay tuned daaaaaahlings.
