Angelina, Paris

The tea room known as Angelina is renowned for its hot chocolate above anything else. It is actually said by many that Angelina has the best hot chocolate... IN THE WORLD! This special concoction is known as the Chocolat Africain. Of course, moi had to judge for herself. I absolutely shudder to think that there may be some amazing treat out there that I am being denied!

When you walk in, the first thing you see is a little counter selling all manner of sweet treats. Here you can also buy some of their famous hot chocolate in bags to take home. I am sure it would make an awesome souvenier for any chocoholic.

Once we were seated in the salon du tea, I must say Hubby and I were quite impressed. The dining rooms have a lot of old world beauty. It has a kind of air of faded glamour.

I ordered the world famous hot chocolate and a croissant, and hubby got a cafe creme and a Mont Blanc (which comes quite highly regarded in many of the blogs I read). The hot chocolate was without a doubt excellent. It was sooooo thick. I would say that somebody probably melted a few bars of chocolate in a teeny bit of milk. It was incredibly luxurious, and the lovely cloudy mass of cream it was served with surely added to the indulgence. But you know what? I wouldn't actually say it was the BEST chocolate in the world. Believe it or not I preferred the simpler hot chocolate at Le Deux Magots. That one had a much thinner consistency, and was less sweet, but I actually think it delivered better on the chocolate taste. It also did not overpower any accompanying food like the Angelina one did. The Angelina hot cocoa should be drunk as a desert in itself, because drinking it with something sweet would be totall overkill (and if you haven't noticed daaaaahlings, I can totally take my sweets). Nevertheless, I would absolutely recommend this to any die hard chocolate fans. You guys would probably swoon!

As for the Mont Blanc, we weren't really sure what to expect. Basically the coating of the desert is made up of a chesnut cream which houses a filling of deliciously cool whipped cream sitting on a meringe base. That cream on the inside was my favourite part. It really was nice, but I can't say that I found the desert as a whole particularly amazing.

I need to admit something to you guys though. There was one thing that I really did not like about Angelina, which may have effected the enjoyment of my food there, and that was the service. I want to note that this was the only bad service experience we had while in Paris. Normally, I'm all about the food, and I'm not too bothered about service in the way a lot of other foodies are. But what happened here was really strange. In the middle of enjoying our treats, the waiter came to our table and gave us the bill. He insisted that he needed to be paid "right now", rather than after we finished. I couldn't help but wonder if he was worried that we were going to try and run off without paying our bill or something. This made me feel kind of uncomfortable.

That being said, I still think you should visit Angelina if you get the chance. It's right next to the Louvre and would make a super fun pit stop after browsing the museum. Sitting there you can almost imagine yourself in a bygone era (where the waiters are total plebs ;)).

Oh I'm still disgusted with that waiter ... how rude!

I loved your pictures, the rooms and the counter look divine. I'd go just so I could stand near that counter with all those treats.

Love reading the review .... hey got those mouse ears yet ... I'm sure Mr P would love them on you :o

You are so sweet to still write about them after the incident. I would have complained to the manager and I hate actually complaining.

As for the place, it does look quaint and classic and I think would be a treat for some people I care about who adore chocolate and Paris. Merci, X.

I've been to Angelina's (daughter lived in Paris 6 years), but don't drink hot chocolate (I know, odd of me) so cannot comment on that, but I loved everything else I ordered there. You're right- so old world. Been a few years, though. Sorry to hear about their service. So important to have excellent service.
Love, love, love your blog.

I had a similar experience in a cocktail bar once. And even though we paid half way through our drinks when we got up to leave someone ELSE came over and asked if we had paid, and when we said yes?... He said we couldn't go until he checked...

I have never worn the dress I was wearing that day again. :P

Also, I know a place in Fulham that my sister claims does the best hot chocolate and they DO just melt a bar of the stuff and then toss in some milk.... I have yet to try this though :)

Oooo...I love hot cocoa. I've always been fascinated by how different cultures and restaurants make their own version. Lovely write-up. Definitely a place I need to remember when I visit Paris.

Boo on the waiter though. What a killjoy!

It was probably a shift change and he didn't want to miss a tip--I would have demanded more chocolates for the rudeness!

I'm so sorry for your experience with that rude waiter! I really wonder how some people can act the way they do. Other than that, this looks like an adorable place, full of charm and elegance. And I love your description of the hot chocolate...a bar of melted chocolate in a little bit of milk sounds like perfection!

I could almost taste that hot chocolate just reading about it...
Does the dessert look like brains to you? :)

I think the waiter's request was over the top, it's just rude.
Angelina's hot chocolate does sound too decadent, like you I think I would want more balance in my sipping beverage. The ambiance is so unique that it may be worth visiting for that alone.

Wow, that pic of the hot chocolate almost looks as thick as chocolate mouse!! it's too bad that you had a bad experience with the service but I'm glad it was the only place where that happened. I feel like Paris gets a bad rap but I found that service was generally nice there.

Rude waiters can be very good at ruining meals. I'm sorry you and your Hubby were interrupted.

I love how Angelina is designed though, very beautiful.

P.S. Usually, I do not tolerate the word "Hubby" (although I'm sure it sounds divine with your English accent,) but after following your blog for a while, I've grown to kind of like this term : )

I had that happen before with a waiter - he told us he was leaving for the day - that may be what was going on but he was just too darn rude to let you know. Or maybe he was just an a%#&*$#! But anywhoo I love the look of this place! So romantic.

What a beautiful place. I'm actually awed by the pictures. I bet it is even more beautiful in person. It's too bad about the service. It takes away from the experience when you get bad service like that.

I think I could drink a vat of that hot chocolate!

That waiter was really rude! I can't believe he did that. If I were you I would write that restaurant a letter. It's just so rude.

Now that hot chocolate looks divine but maybe a little thick.....?

Looks like you experienced some delicious Paris treats and very impolite service at the same time.

Amazing pictures and that chocolate ... sounds heavenly yummy.

Ps: I'm so inspired by your reviews ... I feel like I have to revisit Paris :)

Those waiters are just living up to their stereotype .. how sad. BUT my goodness, let's get back to that hot chocolate! I'm on a constant quest to find THAT kind of hot chocolate here in the US, but to no avail as yet ... Angelina, my sweet, I'll come visit u soon!

Angelina looks gorgeous but I am so turned off by that rude waiter. And I can't say I am a fan of thick hot chocolates as well, would probably enjoy eating those melted chocolate bars a lot more in their solid state. I've never heard of a Mont Blanc before, looks very interesting with all those squigglies all over it (awesome pic b/t/w) and I love me some good whipped cream!

Ok, I would have loved to have gone to Angelina's with you for a hot chocolate. I love it! It is indeed a "meal" in itself and there is not reason to order anything with it. Angelina's has become a tourist trap, truly, so their wonderful salads and beautiful hot chocolate get lost in the Disney atmosphere of gawking tourists. Sad. But the hot chocolate is the best. But I guess I now must try the chocolat at Les Deux Magots.

It looks like a charming tea room! I'd like to sample both hot chocolates to be sure, but I think I'd prefer the less sweet one as you did.

The counter looks gorgeous! As I said so, we have the same taste..he he. I don't like thick hot cocoa too. Oh then the Mont Blanc looks so classical and is such a beauty! Actually, I really wanted to see what's in there. I guess you can't wait to finish it and forgotten to take down the picture lol! ha ha....

We had the same experience at Angelina a few years ago. The hot chocolate was good, but we have had better, the Mont Blanc was kind of, well, not very good. And I love pretty much anything sweet. It is nice to know we aren't alone.

Just got back from Paris and opted to skip Angelina's. Walking back to our apartment one night, we passed the tea room after closing and saw mice. Lots of them, like 2 dozen, running around Angelina's, eating the crumbs off the floor. Yuck!
