While I need to accept that my mission to become a supermodel is just not going to happen by gorging on macaroons and stuff, if all else fails, and I never achieve perfectly slim thighs, I have a back up plan. Oh, you didn’t know I had one of those did you??? The back up plan is to become a super fabulous and eccentric British dame with an adoring public (that would be you, my dear readers!).
Yes, well, slim thighs are well and good, but still, the quest to achieve macaroon fabulosity must continue. If I have to be a martyr, than so be it. Yes, even if they have to shoe-horn me into my Dior Couture, its damn well going to be with some macaroons in my pocket. At least I can make the thin girls cry while they watch me eat, that’s kinda fun, and ultimately, isn’t that really why you love me?
Today was my second attempt into the world of the macaroon. Let me just recap what I learned from my previous attempt. First, do not pipe the macaroon in a swirly-do fashion. Second, don’t make them with chocolate unless you really know what you are doing. Together, these two elements can create quite an unfortunate resemblance to turds (see attempt one).
As for some guesses as to why my macaroons didn’t come off the paper, I have two theories. One is that they needed more time in the oven and the bottoms didn’t cook enough. Two, I have read that you need to put a bit of hot water between the cookie sheet and the parchment paper after they are removed from the oven to create a steam effect to help lift the macaroons. These are only theories though, I don’t actually know why they didn’t come off. These are both things which I hope to correct today.
I have two goals for my second attempt. These are to a) to pipe a pleasing shape and b) to get the meringues to come off the parchment paper.
I also wanted to share a fabulous resource with you if you are thinking of attempting the notoriously difficult macaroon. The following is a step-by step guide with some very helpful information by Deserts Magazine. I am using it as my guide and recipe source, should you like to follow along with me
.
So without any further ado, here are the results after attempt two.
Here they are before going into the oven.
Lookin’ good so far!
Here are those that I was able to get off the paper:
Not to shabby!
And then then were those who did not fare as well:
So this time I was able to get some of these creatures off the paper. But only some. Most of the macaroons were still holding on to the parchment paper for dear life. Any ideas on how we can fix this for attempt three? I feel like I’ve definitely made progress since the turdaroon, and hopefully, if I keep practicing, sucess will soon be mine
.
P.S. On Saturday I was the recipient of a comment by some “Anonymous” hater (which I deleted), reprimanding me on one of my recent commentaries. After much thoughtful consideration, I offer the following heartfelt response: “Bite me, daaaahling!”
